An Introduction and the Details of Food Additives (E Numbers) used in Food Products

Abstract

Allah (SWT) has clarified the rules of halal and haram in the Holy Qur’an. He also urged the prophets and all humanity to eat halal food. In the present age, various food additives are used to make food safe, attractive, durable, germ۔ free and to preserve color and flavor. For ease of understanding, these numbers are called E۔ numbers. Each E۔ number has a unique number to make it easier for the manufacturer and the user to read and understand. This article introduces E۔ numbers, types of additives, historical background of E۔ numbers, need and importance, number, distribution in Shariah and technical terms, usage, harmful effects, halal food industry, and halal certification. The authors have concluded that although the use of food additives (E۔ numbers) is indispensable in the present era, their legal status must be checked before use. Secondly, halal bodies should develop unanimous global standards which will surely end up the contradictions/differences in the status of many E۔ numbers. Thirdly, the halaal industry also needs to be made more active and productive as the demand for halal has been increased. It will also boost up the economy of Muslim countries.
