Abstract

Sheikh Muhammad Ali Sabuni is one of the prominent scholars of the Quran in the modern age. He has summarized rulings derived from almost 65 Quranic verses in his Tafseer which contains two volumes. He endeavors to elucidate the meaning of these verses through eloquent Arabic poetry. He, being expedient, logically addresses the rationale by jurists of different schools of thought. He has stated different recitation styles as well as their connection and incidents behind the revelation of these verses in his authored book. After citing numerous jurists, Sabuni gives preference to the most influential quotations and advocates the ideas of former scholars instead of stating his own arguments. He discusses contradictory ideas but avoids criticism. Allama Sabuni’s Tafseer represents a canonical explanation of the Quran and is famous for its brevity, completeness, comprehensiveness as well as for the scholarly capabilities of the author. His Tafseer is an important contribution to other explanations of Quranic orders and rulings as well as it is beneficial for the intellectuals. Sheikh Sabuni adds words of verses required for reasoning as well as supporting the arguments and evades complete verse. Moreover, the Tafseer is without Israiliyat and Zaeef hadiths which is a tremendous act of virtue.
