The Qur’ānic Context in ‘Allāmā Ṭanṭāwī’s “Tafsīr al-Wasīṭ” and Its Impacts

Abstract

The ‘context’ plays a pivotal role in the interpretation of the Qur’ān. That is why it is considered as the most important principle of Qur’ānic sciences, and if an interpreter does not take care of it, he falls into a wrong ditch. Consequently, the scholars of exegesis used context in various aspects and determined the understanding of the coherence of Qur’ān. Thus, the major focus of this article has been upon the Qur’ānic context. The article explores the linguistic and terminological meanings of ‘Context’, its importance and emphasizes that the scholars of exegesis should adopt ‘context’ as a source of Qur’ānic hermeneutics. The topic has been elaborated and interpreted in the light of the interpretation of ‘Allāmā Ṭanṭāwī’s al-Tafsīr al-wasīṭ lil-Qurʾān al-karīm. His interpretation is considered among the authentic exegesis of the modern-day.
