Abstract

In the subcontinent, before British imperialism, Muslims received their religious education from mosques, while primary schools were attached to it. These institutions instilled in students a sense of awareness and a broad worldview and produced scholars who served simultaneously in government offices and at the social level. The main purpose of this education was to prepare the people for the world and the hereafter at the same time.
This article defines “Education” and its importance in Islam. It discusses the system of Muslim religious education particularly focusing on its objectives and curriculum and the role of the Mosque in it during the Muslims’ Empire in the Subcontinent. The trends of Muslim Education during the reigns of Muhammad Bin Qasim, Mahmud Ghaznavi, Ghurid dynasty, Khilji dynasty, Mamluk Dynasty, Tughluq dynasty, Lodi dynasty, and Mughal Empire are discussed in detail with all the famous Masajid (mosques), schools, centers of learning, pieces of writing and scholars of those eras. With the coming of the Mughals, educational and cultural activities received a great fillip.
