In the modern era, mass communication has a profound influence on public perception and decision-making. Yet the rise of akhbar al-khati’ah (false or misleading news) has become a critical concern, spreading rapidly across media platforms and creating mistrust among communities. Unverified information fuels confusion, social polarisation, and conflict, weakening cohesion and undermining local governance.
This study examines the social, economic, and psychological effects of misinformation through a multidisciplinary approach. It highlights how false news erodes trust, provokes fear, disrupts norms, and impacts markets, emergency response, and civic participation. It also notes the mental toll on individuals, including stress and cognitive overload, which collectively influence community behaviour.
From an Islamic standpoint, truthful and responsible communication is essential for maintaining ethical and social order. The research emphasises the importance of institutional regulation, media literacy, and responsible journalism in combating misinformation, rebuilding trust, and fostering harmony in an increasingly information-dense world.
