Abstract

This study analyzes the rise of physical, psychological, and sexual violence in contemporary societies and foregrounds the often-neglected suffering of victims—women, children, and men—who frequently lack adequate legal protection, social support, and psychological care. It summarizes the background, aims, and practical mechanisms surrounding the United Nations International Day in Support of Victims of Torture and, drawing on the Qur’an and Hadith, argues that Islam forbids all forms of injustice, mandates solidarity with the oppressed as a religious duty, and regards justice as a collective obligation. Consequently, observing the day within Shariah for genuine awareness, assistance, and reform is permissible. The paper also critically evaluates current practices, contending that mixed-gender gatherings, immodesty, symbolic activities, and uncritical Western cultural borrowings can undermine the day’s true purpose and may be religiously objectionable. Through analysis of the psychological, familial, and social impacts of violence, the study concludes that victims require structured support at legal, social, psychological, and spiritual levels. It recommends fast-track justice, safe and confidential reporting systems, Shariah-compliant support centers, awareness campaigns, and integrated religious and psychological counselling to transform the day into an effective mechanism for victim rehabilitation and the development of a just, compassionate society rather than a symbolic event.
